Sault Native Wins 2 CCMA Awards
By Brian Kelly; The Sault Star

Shane Chisholm's moment of triumph was almost thwarted by a confused awards presentation.

The Korah collegiate graduate heard his name announced at Canadian Country Music Association's gala dinner and all-star band awards Saturday. The presenter said nothing else during the presentation for best bass player.

Chisholm started to celebrate. The Sault Ste. Marie native was making his way to the podium when other nominees were finally announced.

"I was kind of worried," said Chisholm in a telephone interview from Edmonton.

"I stopped mid-track about halfway there going, 'Oh no. That was a mistake.' I was worried about having to do the walk of shame back to my people."

There was no need to fear.

With his fourth nomination, Chisholm finally won his instrument category. He also captured the special instrument category for his upright bass fashioned from a minivan gas tank.

"It feels awesome," said Chisholm.

"I didn't get tired of getting the pats on the back either. That was really cool."

Having his talent celebrated was just part of his time in the Alberta city.

An appearance at a songwriter's showcase included The Light, a song about a man with terminal cancer that Chisholm wrote a day earlier.

"That's what was going on in my head at the time," he said of a track about a serious issue so close to an awards event.
